Andrew Wakefield is not going away, but if yesterday’s anti-vaccine rally in Chicago is any indication, his audience is growing smaller and smaller.
About 100 anti-vaccine activists turned out to hear Wakers and nine other speakers on a sunny day in Grant Park. If you add event volunteers, vendors, press, speakers, skeptics, and curious bystanders, the crowd numbered less than 200. As Kevin at LBRB says, it was a bit of a damp squib.
Like any good public speaker, Wakefield started off with a story:
About 15 years ago a mother from London approached him and said “Do not judge me too harshly Dr. Wakefield, but when I die I am taking my son with me. You see, I’m all he has. I’m the only one who loves him.”
“I didn’t judge,” said Wakefield. “I was moved by the love that a mother must have for her child that she would take his life rather than have him fall upon a society that really didn’t give a damn.”

Having established street cred, Wakefield went on to assure his fans that vaccines are way more dangerous that the diseases they protect us against, and they are not being adequately studied for safety. So Wakefield, disgraced and defrocked medical doctor and spiritual guru to American’s floundering anti-vaccine movement, will soldier on, and continue to do the studies that the medical establishment is afraid of. Or something like that.
The crowd also heard from financial analyst and amateur immunologist Michael Belkin, who played electric guitar and sang Vaccine Gestapo. He was introduced by a speaker who claimed “vaccine safety” is the defining issue of our day – forget global warming, social inequality, radical Islam, and the season finale of Lost. The real tragedy is that too many children are protected against too many diseases. Fortunately we have a talented songwriter to whip the masses into a frenzy. Lucky audience members snagged free copies of Belkin’s CD, which featured two other ditties: We Don’t Want Their Flu Vaccine, and Keep Your Mandates Out of My Body. Here’s the cover art:
Vaccine trial lawyers hit some low notes of their own. Attorney Robert Krakow, who draws his sustenance from the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, pretended to lead anti-vaccine activists in The Fish Cheer. He stopped at F, and quipped “That’s what the government can do with its vaccine program.” Referring to his salad days of prosecuting drug crimes in Manhattan, Krakow confessed “I should have been going after the real drug pushers” – meaning the CDC, AAP, FDA, etc.
Note to Attorney Krakow: Technically speaking, vaccines are not drugs, they’re “biologics”. But we get it – you’re mad.
For a time, Wakefield stuck close by Attorney Jim Moody, another vaccine-court regular, not surprising given that so many of the ethical charges against Wakefield stemmed from his cozy relationships with trial lawyers. Here’s Wakefield and Moody catching some rays.
Rally organizers clearly expected much larger crowds, as evidenced by dozens of anti-vaccine signs still unused by 5 pm, when the park started to clear out. A sign-in sheet listed about 35 names and email addresses. Hundreds of free bananas remained unclaimed, and most of the vendors’ tables that lined one side of the quad remained empty.
Meanwhile, the rest of city carried on as normal. In this case, that was a good thing.

This story is so close to home, that this little girl might as well be Mickie. He could never tell me if someone hurt him……and for all I know I might have already happen-there is no way he could tell anyone!
If not for video surveillance in the school bus, the abuse of a little girl with autism, might have gone unpunished.

TRUMBULL — For a 9-year-old autistic girl, hell was riding the school bus every day.
That’s when, police say, the 24-year-old bus monitor, Jennifer Davila, would torture the young girl, pinching her, poking her, wrenching the girl’s small fingers as they drove along the route from the girl’s home to school and back again.
For the girl’s mother it was a nightmare come true.
“Imagine having a child who can’t tell you she has been hurt but she has been severely injured several times,” said the mother, who asked that her name not be used. “It’s agony. You send your child into what you expect is a safe environment and then learn later it was in fact a place of danger to her. It’s just unthinkable.” On Tuesday morning Davila, of East Washington Avenue in Bridgeport, appeared in Superior Court in Bridgeport.
Davila is charged with three counts of risk of injury to a child and three counts of third-degree assault on a disabled person. Free on bond, her case was continued without a plea to Sept. 9.
“My client denies all the allegations against her and we are going to continue to investigate the state’s claims,” said Davila’s lawyer, Stuart Hawkins.
According to police, on at least three occasions last April and May, Davila, a monitor on a bus for special needs children for the First Student Bus Co., abused the little girl. Police said there could have been more incidents but only three were captured on the bus’s video surveillance camera.

Last spring Mickie started to fall sleep in odd places including the bathtub, so I started to documented and put together this video. Shortly after he began to regress and I just didn’t have the motivation to upload it, but I decided to share it now, since I thought it was cute at the time. I think he was looking for cool places to sleep-though we have central air conditioning, I guessing the bathtub must feel pretty fresh and cool.

As the years have passed I have found myself making changes in my home that I never imagined, but the idea of being able to sleep the few hours at night without worrying about my son Mickie getting hurt kept me making the changes that have helped regain some sense of security.
One should never underestimate people with Autism. They are very smart, no matter how it seems and will plan for days even months a way around any security measures to get to what they want.
My son used to get into everything and for a time life was very chaotic for his sisters and me, so I modified our home as soon as a new behavior arrived. This has made it possible for him to roam free around his home, even at night, without getting hurt. He still needs to be watched when he is awake, but the changes have helped.
1. All outlets covered with metal plates (he used to rip them off and try to take out the electric cables, so don’t use plastic, because they will rip them off)
2. Locked Kitchen (he also has an insatiable appetite and has pica)
3. Security doors leading to the outside (he is a wanderer)
4. Pictures bolted to the walls (took everything off the walls before)
5. All cabinets locked (used to empty them and make a huge mess)
6. Zero access to heaters and air conditioner units (used to try to pull off the cables)
7 TV enclosed in a wood case with plexy glass in front (used to brake electronics)
8 Clean floors (he would otherwise pick things up and put them in his mouth)
9 Cabinets are secured to the wall (he is a climber)
10 An outside valve to turn off the water in his bathroom (likes to run the water and flooded his bathroom years ago)Etc…..

In this interview, Dr. Andrew Wakefield shares his personal and professional insights into a number of topics, from the gut-brain connection so often seen in autistic children, to the safety of a number of childhood vaccines.
But most importantly, he sets the record straight on the harsh criticism he’s endured as the author of one of the most controversial vaccine-causing-autism studies ever done.
In addition to his hotly contested MMR study, published in the journal Lancet in 1998, he has published about 130-140 peer-reviewed papers looking at the mechanism and cause of inflammatory bowel disease, and has extensively investigated the brain-bowel connection in the context of children with developmental disorders such as autism.
