The anti-vaccine movement frequently complains that the medical establishment doesn’t spend enough time listening to parents. Sometimes the news and entertainment media take the bait.
“It is impossible to overlook the larger and direct dangers inherent in (Jenny McCarthy’s) position on vaccines,” wrote Karl Taro Greenfeld in Time Magazine last winter. “Yet it is equally difficult to ignore the emotional core of what she is saying: Listen to parents. If doctors won’t, then McCarthy will.”
The “parent as victim” meme is the donkey that pulls the anti-vaccine cart. McCarthy speaks lovingly of her “angry mob”. Generation Rescue founder J.B. Handley boasts of harnessing that anger to “bring the U.S. vaccine program to its knees.”
But last week, a member of the “medical establishment” was listening to parents at the annual AutismOne confab at Chicago’s Westin O’Hare. What happened next shows us that the “emotional core” of Jenny McCarthy’s angry mob is as hollow as its science.
A staff member of a western state department of public health was reportedly attending a session on vaccines and parental rights. According to one source, the speaker was advising parents how to apply for and receive vaccine exemptions. The session was interrupted by an AutismOne organizer who commandeered a microphone to announce that a state health department staff member was present, so parents should be careful about what was discussed.
A short time later four Westin O’Hare security guards entered the room, identified the staffer, and directed her to leave the conference facility.
On the way out, the ejected staffer asked to use the restroom. She was told that was OK, as long as an AutismOne volunteer accompanied her to the ladies room.
An email to an AutismOne conference organizer sent Thursday afternoon, asking for comment, has not been answered.
It gets worse.
Saturday morning, Chicago filmmaker and independent journalist Lars Ullberg was tossed out of the Westin O’Hare, a mere ten minutes after planting himself on a seat in a lecture hall.
“They wouldn’t even talk to me,” says Ullberg, who had paid to attend after being refused a press pass. “She (conference organizer Teri Arranga) just kept reading their ‘right to eject language.’”
The AutismOne website states “We reserve the right not to register any individual based on our own judgment. We further reserve the right to ask any participant to leave the conference if that person’s conduct substantially interferes with the participation of others.” Ullberg said no explanation was given for how his conduct (i.e., sitting in a chair) was interfering with others.
Prior to attending, Ullberg had received an email from Arranga, spelling out the conditions of his attendance that would make Dear Leader proud:
Autism One is not prepared to offer press passes to you or your crew. Although you and each of your crew members may pay the registration fee as regular attendees, subject to the usual terms of attendance, neither you nor your crew members are permitted to conduct any videography, photography, audio recording, or press interviews; furthermore neither you nor your crew members are permitted to quote attendees, presenters, exhibitors, volunteers, or staff in any manner that will be quoted, “on the record,” or used for public or private media or instructional purposes. Additionally, you and your crew members must identify yourselves accurately with your affiliations to those to whom you speak and also not mislead them to think that you are simply seeking information with which to help your child. Finally, you may not eavesdrop on private conversations between attendees. In summary, Autism One grants no permission to you or your crew to report on this conference or its attendees. Should we become aware that you are not following these guidelines, we will not hesitate to ask you to leave the conference.
“My hope was they would actually have a conversation with me,” says Ullberg, who says many of the presenters at AutismOne are making legitimate points. Apart from quack medical claims, some speakers addressed behavioral therapy, respite care, educational strategies, and other mainstream parent concerns.
“We can’t learn if we don’t listen,” he added.

This story is so close to home, that this little girl might as well be Mickie. He could never tell me if someone hurt him……and for all I know I might have already happen-there is no way he could tell anyone!
If not for video surveillance in the school bus, the abuse of a little girl with autism, might have gone unpunished.

TRUMBULL — For a 9-year-old autistic girl, hell was riding the school bus every day.
That’s when, police say, the 24-year-old bus monitor, Jennifer Davila, would torture the young girl, pinching her, poking her, wrenching the girl’s small fingers as they drove along the route from the girl’s home to school and back again.
For the girl’s mother it was a nightmare come true.
“Imagine having a child who can’t tell you she has been hurt but she has been severely injured several times,” said the mother, who asked that her name not be used. “It’s agony. You send your child into what you expect is a safe environment and then learn later it was in fact a place of danger to her. It’s just unthinkable.” On Tuesday morning Davila, of East Washington Avenue in Bridgeport, appeared in Superior Court in Bridgeport.
Davila is charged with three counts of risk of injury to a child and three counts of third-degree assault on a disabled person. Free on bond, her case was continued without a plea to Sept. 9.
“My client denies all the allegations against her and we are going to continue to investigate the state’s claims,” said Davila’s lawyer, Stuart Hawkins.
According to police, on at least three occasions last April and May, Davila, a monitor on a bus for special needs children for the First Student Bus Co., abused the little girl. Police said there could have been more incidents but only three were captured on the bus’s video surveillance camera.

“I’m so glad Andy Wakefield finally has the chance to tell his story. Perhaps no debate on the planet right now is more confusing, more conflicting, or more maddening for parents than the debate over the causes and treatments of autism . . . For hundreds of thousands of parents around the world, myself included, Andy Wakefield is a symbol of strength and conviction that all parents of children with autism can use to fight for truth and the best lives possible for their kids.”
—from the foreword by Jenny McCarthy
.
Approximately one out of every 110 children has an autism spectrum disorder according to the latest CDC data.
The number of autistic children has grown exponentially in the last 20 years. And Dr. Wakefield has dedicated his professional career to helping those affected and to saving children from becoming part of this pandemic.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Parents of healthy children are worried. Parents of children diagnosed with autism want answers.
Like Dr. Wakefield, many believe there is a link between childhood vaccinations, specifically the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine and autism. No one, though, has proven a link, and no one has disproven one. It may be the biggest medical controversy raging in the world today. Andrew Wakefield stands squarely and resolutely in the center of the controversy.
In 1995, Dr. Wakefield simply posed two questions: 1.) is the MMR vaccine safe and 2.) Can MMR vaccine cause autistic regression and intestinal disease?
In 1998, after reviewing 12 children suffering from autistic regression and bowel symptoms, he and his colleagues published an early report in the medical journal The Lancet. This paper combined with his recommendation for single vaccines threatened some of the world’s most powerful interests and lit the fuse of the ensuing vaccine wars.
Having what has become one of the most controversial clinical papers in modern medical history, and later been found guilty by Britain’s General Medical Council of “callous disregard” for the suffering of children, Dr. Wakefield’s new book brings his story and the full story of his research to the world.

In Callous Disregard, Dr. Wakefield sets the record straight…
…about his much maligned paper, dispels many of the myths about his work that are now parroted dogmatically by the mainstream medical community and the press, and describes his view of the efforts to discredit his work. He reveals the story of a government whistleblower who called himself “George” whose expert concerns about the MMR Vaccine went unheeded by regulators.
Dr. Wakefield explains that he is not anti-vaccine, but rather an advocate of a “safety first” vaccine policy. His recommendation in 1998, when his paper was first published, as well as today is a return to single-strain vaccines, rather than the combination MMR.
Whatever you have heard or read about Andrew Wakefield, you probably do not know the full story. Here, finally, in Callous Disregard, is that story for all to read.
…
“Dr. Wakefield sets the record straight. It was not he who showed callous disregard towards vulnerable, sick children with autism. It was the British medical establishment, the General Medical Council, the media and the pharmaceutical industry that threw the children under the bus to protect the vaccine program. This is a book for everyone who cares about our future.”

“Andrew Wakefield has been subjected to extraordinary criticism and condemnation from professional colleagues and the wider community since he first questioned the safety of the MMR vaccine. In this book he answers his critics—powerfully and comprehensively—and sets the record straight. It is essential reading for anyone wanting to know the truth behind the MMR debate and the politics of vaccination policy.”
—Dr. Richard Halvorsen, author of The Truth about Vaccines
.
Callous Disregard also has a clear message for parents concerned about vaccinations:
“To the parents, I would say, trust your instincts above all else. When considering how to vaccinate your children, read, get educated, and demand full informed consent and answers to your questions. When you are stonewalled or these answers are not to your satisfaction, trust your instinct. I say this as someone who has studied and engaged in the science and who has become aware of the limitations of our knowledge and understanding of vaccine safety issues. Maternal instinct has been a steady hand upon the tiller of evolution; we would not be here without it.”
.
In the epilogue of Callous Disregard, he pleads:
“Stop for a moment. Politicians, regulators, manufacturers, attorneys, bloggers, and hangers-on: Act now to protect children. Act now to protect the benefits of the vaccine program. Put safety first above any other consideration.”

“As a mother of a boy who regressed into autism immediately following his MMR vaccination, I welcome this book unreservedly . . . Whatever your thoughts on the issue, if you read nothing else at all on the vaccine-autism debate, this has to be the most crucial book you read.”
—Polly Tommey, Editor-in-Chief, The Autism File
.
“Meeting Dr. Andy Wakefield changed our lives and . . . we are forever grateful. His wise and measured advice about vaccinations helped us dodge a bullet . . . Our fourth son [had] multiple allergies and repeated infections . . . We now fully realize [he] would have been a victim of immune overload had we followed the regular vaccine schedule . . . [He] is [now] bright and healthy . . . This book provides a terrifying insight into what has been happening behind the scenes as efforts redouble to silence Dr. Wakefield . . . It is a wake-up call to those who think [he] is anything other than a modern day hero fighting for all of our children.”

Stop Calling It Autism! was founded with the purpose of helping defeat Autism once and for all. As crazy as it might sound at this point, defeating Autism is totally possible, science currently exists that explains EVERYTHING medically and is as concrete and clear as you can ever imagine, no puzzles or mysteries.
Instead of hearing one success story here or there, we have to work together and prove that Autism is a set of symptoms caused by a medical disease so we can get the most needed medical help for ALL the children suffering from Autism.
We are starting a fight for your children and for all the children suffering from Autism out there. We promise you that we will do our best. Now… We will only be successful if every single family with children suffering from “Autism” gets involved to make the SCIA goals listed below a reality. We need you!
Below are the links for the Stop Calling It Autism! (SCIA) brochure that we are putting together. This brochure has been a great exercise to define who SCIA is and what the mission, believes and goals are. The brochure explains what SCIA is all about. If there is something you don’t understand let us know. The brochure has to be easy to understand and “as clear as water”.
Please review the brochure and let us know what you think. We are just about to be ready to send the brochure for print and we need your invaluable opinion.

SCIA Goals
· Create a world that redefines Autism
· Create a world where doctors no longer think that Autism is a developmental or psychiatric disorder but a medical problem that can be treated medically.
· Create a world where parents can take their children to any doctor, in any city, in any country where the doctor says I know what this is; recognize that it is an immune mediated medical condition, and knows what to do about it.
· Create a world where researchers and governments recognize the enormity of the Autism epidemic and have no choice but to put all available resources into solving it
· Create a world where the pharmaceutical companies are competing to be the first to develop the medicines to treat and put an end to Autism
· Create a world where researchers, educators, behaviorists and doctors realize they all have a piece of the Autism puzzle and they need to work together to solve it.
· Create a world where when a child turns 18, the only group home he is going into is a college dorm
· Create a world that has a single focus and recognizes that Autism is a set of symptoms caused by a medical disease.
· Create a world where individuals with Autism recover and have the potential for full productive lives.

Last spring Mickie started to fall sleep in odd places including the bathtub, so I started to documented and put together this video. Shortly after he began to regress and I just didn’t have the motivation to upload it, but I decided to share it now, since I thought it was cute at the time. I think he was looking for cool places to sleep-though we have central air conditioning, I guessing the bathtub must feel pretty fresh and cool.

In this interview, Dr. Andrew Wakefield shares his personal and professional insights into a number of topics, from the gut-brain connection so often seen in autistic children, to the safety of a number of childhood vaccines.
But most importantly, he sets the record straight on the harsh criticism he’s endured as the author of one of the most controversial vaccine-causing-autism studies ever done.
In addition to his hotly contested MMR study, published in the journal Lancet in 1998, he has published about 130-140 peer-reviewed papers looking at the mechanism and cause of inflammatory bowel disease, and has extensively investigated the brain-bowel connection in the context of children with developmental disorders such as autism.

As the years have passed I have found myself making changes in my home that I never imagined, but the idea of being able to sleep the few hours at night without worrying about my son Mickie getting hurt kept me making the changes that have helped regain some sense of security.
One should never underestimate people with Autism. They are very smart, no matter how it seems and will plan for days even months a way around any security measures to get to what they want.
My son used to get into everything and for a time life was very chaotic for his sisters and me, so I modified our home as soon as a new behavior arrived. This has made it possible for him to roam free around his home, even at night, without getting hurt. He still needs to be watched when he is awake, but the changes have helped.
1. All outlets covered with metal plates (he used to rip them off and try to take out the electric cables, so don’t use plastic, because they will rip them off)
2. Locked Kitchen (he also has an insatiable appetite and has pica)
3. Security doors leading to the outside (he is a wanderer)
4. Pictures bolted to the walls (took everything off the walls before)
5. All cabinets locked (used to empty them and make a huge mess)
6. Zero access to heaters and air conditioner units (used to try to pull off the cables)
7 TV enclosed in a wood case with plexy glass in front (used to brake electronics)
8 Clean floors (he would otherwise pick things up and put them in his mouth)
9 Cabinets are secured to the wall (he is a climber)
10 An outside valve to turn off the water in his bathroom (likes to run the water and flooded his bathroom years ago)Etc…..

In his new book Callous Disregard, Dr. Andrew Wakefield talks about how he confronted a disease and then the medical system that sought and still seeks to deny that link, leaving millions of children to suffer and a world at risk.
